ESTABLISHED asks the EMERGING Interview with Angela Giuliani by Jane Bowden

Jane’s interview with Angela Giuliani – 2nd year at Adelaide College of the Arts.
When did you decide to become a jeweller?
That’s a hard question! I wanted to do architecture when I left school. I took a year off and did a certificate in jewellery and just kept doing it.
What do you enjoy about making?
I like getting my hands dirty….. I actually wanted to be a mechanic first.
I like that it’s not all about the metal and that I can explore new media, paper and plastics. I love new and original, things that haven’t been done before.
What is your favourite piece of jewellery that you own?
Its not a piece of jewellery, I don’t own much but I do love my duck umbrella that I was given when I was 7, I still use it today and it still makes me happy.
You are still studying, so what has been your favourite technique to learn so far?
It might not be a technique but non metals was great. If it has to be a jewellery technique I would say sinking and raising. I made a great vessel which I raised from flat. Awesome!
Have you got any ideas of what you want to do at the end of your studies?
I’m still feeling my way but I’d like to slowly collect tools for my own workshop and just keep on making.
I think the audience would like to know what your hobbies are.
I like playing soccer! And eating lots of good food.
(You should see the sandwiches Angela brings to Zu design…..crazy tall)
Have you seen any good exhibitions lately?
I just went to the Vienna Art Exhibition in Melbourne and that was pretty good. I loved a painting that was a scene of an old school theatre, with everyone seated in their 1800’s clothing.
What’s a piece that you’re working on at the moment?
I’m making a ring for my grandmother and grandfather from my family. They are silver with sapphires. It’s nice to make something that’s not a college project.

*Jane Bowden is mega-jeweller-deluxe and co-director of Zu design

- i asked Jane to send me some images, thinking jewellery pieces perhaps ?.... Jane thought we should see her famous sandwich making skills. This is now insentive to meet Angela and see if her jewellery pieces are as tasty as her lunch !
